In response to feedback from schools, we’ve created a new role to keep older children engaged. Veg Hunter Champions gives children a sense of ownership and helps them understand why eating vegetables – and a programme like Eat Them to Defeat Them – is important. This optional add-on helps boost engagement and educational value.
It’s best to start with the Veg Hunters lesson plans. The Veg Hunter Champion lesson plans are for children selected as Champions and introduce them to the programme and their role. There are KS1/P2–3 and Y5–6/P6–7 versions. The Veg Hunter lesson plan is for the remaining children in Y2–6/P3–7 and explains what’s happening in the school.
We also challenge your Veg Hunter Champions to run The Great Veg Vote, finding out the school’s favourite vegetables and which ones pupils need to eat more of, and sharing results as part of a nationwide poll. This engaging activity can run at any time – or not at all – it’s your choice.
Our Eat the Rainbow lesson plan adds another educational layer for older children, explaining why it’s important to eat a rainbow of vegetables and how Eat Them to Defeat Them supports this.
Finally, check out our guides to working with your school caterers, winning the Schools’ Challenge, and decorating your school. These tools support the core Eat Them to Defeat Them activities and help you shape the programme to suit your school.
